Hi

My son is 24, and planning to work in Australia for a couple of years, starting in May. He's had insurance from birth, currently on VHI PMI 04 10. He wants to ensure he has reasonable cover while away, and preserve his record so that he doesn't have to serve any waiting periods or incur any age loading, if he returns to Ireland.

VHI have recommended their 'International Policy' level 1 plan at 1110 euro. They also mentioned if he were to take direct cover with a local provider in Australia he would loose continuity of benefits if he returns to Ireland.

Is this correct ? And would you have an opinion on this plan, or recommend any alternatives.

Thanks
Decision.

Hi Decision Tree,

Firstly, age loading doesn't apply until a person is aged over 34 years, so he is 10 years away from any age loadings.
Secondly, it is correct that he would lose continuity of benefits on return to Ireland, if he were to take direct cover with a local provider in Austrailia.

The VHI International plan is the best option for cover while abroad, and a seamless continuation of cover on return to Ireland, with NO waiting
times attached.
There is also a built-in travel policy for any holidays taken while in Austrailia and also travel cover for a trip home to Ireland included, if necessary.

VHI are the only health insurance provider that provide this type of international policy in Ireland where there is continuous cover on return
with any of the 3 providers. He must have the policy in place before leaving Ireland as you can't do it when already abroad.

Insurance companies Allianz Worldwide Care and Bupa International policies are not recognised on return.

Regards, Snowyb
