lately my mothers first cousin died. my mother was this mans only living relative as he had no siblings or no children. my mother was not named as this mans next of kin as while they would have been friendly were not in constant touch with each other. a neighbour was named as his next of kin. Does that mean the neighbour would inherit everything belonging to the man? This is not a greed thing as we didnt have much contact with the man and his neighbours were very good to him. My Mother has no interest in looking into this but we want to know how would we know if this man made a will and how to go about finding out? Any help greatly apreciated.

What do you mean "named as next of kin". Who said that the neighbour was a next of kin, and in what way ?

You cannot change who your legal next of kin is.

If there is a will, it is will make clear who inherits your uncles estate.
If not, the rules will take over and if your mother may be the benefitiery.
