Cottage renovation

Hi,
I have been reading through the posts and have found some good information regarding what I intend doing.
Just a quick outline, I have puchased a very old cottage at a good price. Its habitable but extremely small and I am planning to put a decent size extension onto the back of it.
The question I have is if anyone has done something similar and used timerframe for the extension?
If so, would it be possible to give some costings, pitfalls etc?
Any advice would be great.
Cheers

i know you wouldnt see the timber frame when finished but would it not be more in keeping with existing structure to build a block extension. Given the competitive prices of brickies at the moment it might be just as cheap.

thanks bamboozle, I spoke to an architect about this last night and he was of the same opinion, he also brought up the point that it can be difficult to tie in the timberframe to existing block construction.
like yourself he also reckons that I wouldnt be saving much with the current climate.
