Cost to swap bike tyre

The shop I'd normally use charges €8 to change over a tyre
My local suburban shop charged me whopping €30 which I didn't expect

I would say that €8 is extremely cheap and €30 is very expensive .
if you are not willing to give the shop the business of buying the tyre from them, they are entitledd to charge a bit of a premium for fitting only. They have expenses to cover. I am always amazed how cheap bike repairs and servicing is.

Patches can be troublesome.

Yeap would agree with you here but probably not for the reason you were thinking
The main problem I had before I switched to tubeless was getting the correct size patches or repair kit
If your trying to patch a 700x23c road tube you need a very small patch for that compared to 27.5x2.0 MTB tube
As they say the job is a lot easier when you have the right tools

Wish I had you as a customer when I worked in a bike shop, the usual comments were along the lines of
"Good God never knew how much a bike could cost to buy or service"
"My last car service was cheaper than this"
or just the "How much" followed on with a few expletives

I have had some success with glue-less patches; but glue or not I'd say my success rate is about 50%.

My understanding with "glue-less patches is their really only a temporary fix to get you home
It's been years since I've used them but any time I did they only lasted about a week before the glue stopped working

I paid €35 the other day but it was replacing a tubeless tyre and the rim tape needed redoing as part of it

I'm mostly doing patches on my commuter bikes which are not racing tyres or family bikes 1.5-2.0" slicks. The self adhesive patches work ok for me. But the tyres Especially puncture resistant tyres or small tyres 20" can be tight on the rim. Need good levers. Haven't commuted in a couple of years though.

Inner tubes can be patched.

In my experience, bike shops nowadays don't generally do this. To much time/hassle and risk to reputation in case the patch does not work perfectly. There can often be secondary punctures on a tube, especially if the customer had continued to cycle for a few metres after the tube went flat. Safer for them to just put in a new tube in which is probably only about ~€2 to the bike shop at cost price.

I've paid €5 for a tyre to be replaced before in Dublin 12 but I brought them the wheel alone, with the old tyre removed and the new one ready to go - in this case I just couldn't get the new tyre to seat on the wheel. The chap did it there and then in about 2 minutes flat.

I wouldn't normally expect a biek shop to fit parts I've ordered online unless they're rare or hard to get etc.
