Cost effective tree topping - tractor/disc?

Hi

I'm wondering how likely it is that a farmer would do this for us?

To me, these cutting discs/attachments look like larger circular saws - all we want is the trees topped by about 6 feet - no clearing up required, we'll do all that.

Anyone any experience or feedback on this?

I would reckon you would be better to get an agriculural contractor or tree surgeon to do it for you.
Just to be sure that they public liablity insurance in place and all that.
Also they will know what time of the years you can cut at...

A typical farmer would not have this equipment. This work is largely done by contractors. I had hedges cut for REPS late last year and the contractor was €60 per hour. Certain times of the year when this work is not allowed.

Under the Wildlife Acts, 1976 (2000), it is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy any vegetation growing in any hedge or ditch from 1 March to 31 August. This shall not apply in relation to destroying, in the ordinary course of agriculture, any vegetation growing on or in any hedge or ditch; as well as for reasons of public health or safety; among others.

You may well end up with a contractor as not every farmer will have those saw head hedge cutters. Specialised stuff.
No harm in asking though. we got our whole garden hedge cut back to about 6ft from about 10-12 ft last November, best to leave it until the birds are out of their nests, a contractor cutting the roadside hedge for Eircom I think, gave him 30yoyo and we where both happy chaps.

Thanks all

jmrc, just what I wanted to hear. :)

I've seen a tractor around our way quite a few times with this saw thing - so I'm guessing he's relatively local.

You say your 'whole garden hedge' - how big is your garden approximately?

I had hedges cut for REPS late last year...

Sorry, don't know what this means.

I intend to comply with Wildlife Act BTW.

Caveat, Hedge is approx 120-150mtrs long. didn't take long, about 20-25min if memory serves. Wasn't very heavy either so he could lash on. Saved me a lot of hassle too..

Thanks for that.

I'll keep my eyes open for tractors with lethal weapons attached.

We're probably looking at around a 300m perimeter of lleylandi.

lleylandi......... kept that part low key !!!! Nightmare trees, neighbour from hell stuff there !!! only kidding . Hard to keep though.

Secman

lleylandi......... kept that part low key !!!!

:D Indeed - only because of the emotional responses to the monsters!

No neighbour issues though thankfully - because we don't have neighbours.

Thankfully.
