Hi
60yrs next birthday, 40yrs service with HSE. Class A PRSI. Coordinated Pension at Retirement. Advised to apply for ill health Retirement as I have a long standing medical condition. Question- do I apply for illness benefit, invalidity pension before officially submitting documentation to retire please? How do you bridge the financial gap between 60 & 66yrs if you don’t retire until 63yrs to get your lump sum & occ pension? Invalidity pension is €12k per annum approx. I’m receiving conflicting advice & urgently need clarification please. Thanks

If you have 40 yrs service at age 60, can't you retire with pension and lump-sum at age 60?

Then the SPC kicks in at age 66.

Between 60 and 66 you may be eligible for the Supplementary pension.

So you are a pre-2004 pension scheme entrant? Which would mean you have a normal retirement age 60? If so, you can retire normally on "full pension" at 60. What is the perceived advantage of applying for ill-health retirement? The most this will pay is the same as "full" normal retirement pension.

You could look at illness benefit between now and age 60. Are you on HSE sick leave? I think employees are eligible for 3 months at full rate and 3 months at half rate.

With a normal retirement age of 60 you can apply for the Occupational Supplementary Pension (OSP) immediately from that age if you retire. As you say that you have 40 years of service (with Class A PRSI?) the OSP should be at the same rate as the current rate of State Pension. Together with the HSE pension this should total to 0.5 of your pensionable salary.

It does seem a bit unusual that you would have 40 pensionable years with the HSE at Class A PRSI, though. Perhaps you transferred from one of the voluntary hospital schemes (VHSS) or from a Section 38 service?

@JG 2023,
It may be that you are not a member of the standard HSE Superannuation Scheme and work in a "non-established" position. This would account for 40 years service in the HSE at Class A PRSI.

If so, the suggestion in the above posts don't apply. The normal retirement age in the non-established pension is 65. The advise to apply for ill-health retirement seems appropriate. If you get ill-health retirement you are eligible to apply for a Supplementary Pension if your social welfare benefit (eg, Invalidity Pension) is less that the current full State Pension rate - with 40 years service you should be eligible for the full difference. You have to apply separately to your current employment office at retirement for the Supplementary top-up.

Maybe you could clarify your position. There are others who may be able to advise on the ill-health retirement procedures.

HSE doesn't use the term established non established. Its Officer or non officer. Non officer were known as Servants and later Employees, the capital isn't a typo. So the poster is a non officer.

To answer your initial question, apply for illness benefit now. There's no reason not to.
