Confused about salary scale on grade promotion

The issue is, I requested the promotion on the basis of an immediate and noteworthy wage gain due to some of the work I had begun doing (which was way above my pay-scale, something I would have been paid much higher to do in the private sector for example). I'm proud of this work and happy with how it benefited my employer. This is why it was a bit deflating to see the immediate gain only go up by roughly 3k.
Why don't you look at moving into the private sector?

Not straightaway perhaps but surely the new scale increases to a much greater amount than the one before promotion?
That's true but the increases are not significantly enough in my opinion. But perhaps that's just in local authorities as opposed to other public sector employers which may have wider margins between scales. The difference at the top of both scales is only around €6-7k before tax, which I wouldn't really consider significant enough in relation to the extra demands and responsibilities expected at a higher grade.

That does sound like a relatively small gap. In my area of work the gaps are much wider which brigs its own challenges.

Regrades would be rare, the scope of work done at a grade is broad. There is still potential for overlap between grades and I think you get a guaranteed 5k increase but depending on the roles you go between that may not seem a lot for taking on the management of a team for example.

The other issue to consider is that the new grade, even though it may not pay much more, provides an opportunity for experience that would help you to get further promotions.

It used to be the case that you had to spend a number of years in grades before you could apply for promotion to the next but that’s no longer the case. I’ve seen people skip quite quickly from clerical positions to senior management. If someone puts in the work and is ambitious and driven, they keep their eye on the bigger long-term picture. It depends what people want for themselves. Everyone’s different.

Hi all, just a follow up on this thread - I have just had job evaluation to take me from Grade III Clerical to Grade IV Clerical. I am wondering where I will fall on the payscale. I am currently on the 3rd point of Grade III scale (32,969k) and my increment date is December 2025 which I would be moving to point 5 (35,100k) (skipping point 4). I am just wondering would my starting salary as Grade IV be the 1st point of scale or the 2nd? I have seen conflicting information online and am unsure. Starting salary Grade IV is 35,256k and as this is nearly the same as my next increment I would hope I would get to move to the 2nd point...does anyone have any experience with this?

If the change occurs prior to your increment date you will be on the first point of Grade IV. If it occurs after, you will be on the second point. Your new increment dates will be based on date of promotion. As a matter of interest who are you due to skip point 4?

It is part of the new entrant provisions - as I started after March 2020 clerical and admin grades are entitled to essentially skip point 4 and 8 on the salary scale, as I am on point 3 now I would skip point 4 and go straight to point 5

I'm fairly sure this is not the case. While it's true that two additional incremental points were added to some grades during the so-called FEMPI measures - they were scrapped about four or five years ago. Those adjustments to the scale have already been made - and those affected were given the benefit of skipping those points on the scale. As things stand you'll go from point 3 to the current point 4.

In other words, those additional points on the scale - which were a money-saving exercise to slow down progress up the scale - have been been withdrawn.

Just to add: On promotion in the Civil Service, say from CO to EO the practice is, you get put on whatever is the next highest salary on the EO scale - plus one extra increment. (It's a separate issue to the New Entrants agreement.)
