So I tried it out:
For my address it lists Virgin Media 500Mbps cable and Open Eir part-fibre 10.2Mbps - ignoring the fact that at least 1Gbps is available from VM and on FTTH services from various providers.
If they're not going to provide accurate/up to date information to consumers why did they bother? Why not leave it to the likes of Bonkers or Switcher who seem to manage to do this properly and without spending public money?
For what it's worth I've emailed them about my experience and with my opinions.

The Commission for Communications Regulation has made available an online consumer resource called Broadband Checker (comreg.ie/broadbandchecker).
