my brother (wife, 2 kids.) works for a builder at present, he doesn't get payslips but takes home €500 in wages. he has been offered a job elsewhere with salary of €28,000 and €3,500 bonus yearly.is he better off with €31,500 gross or €26,000 nett.thanks in advance

He should by law receive a pay slip every week, however, I am aware some builders do not provide one. Your friend should ensure that his PRSI contributions to are up to date and he is registered for the Construction Industry Federation Pension Scheme. See here

He may be better off to take the new job. Try out the following tax calculator.

If he is earning €500 per week why no payslips? Is his employer just lazy about the paperwork or is there something more serious going on.
If that is the case and he has a new job offer at €28000 with payslips and records of tax and PRSI payable I would suggest he grab it with both hands QUICK

I would also make sure that his PRSI and tax have been returned. It is not clear from the original post however, if the person is aware that they may not be tax compliant.

no its not anything underhand just laziness on the builders part he is paying tax and prsi as is the builder. he got a p60 at end of year but has misplaced it

Does his wife work? If not then going by the calculator he will be better off by the bonus amount in moving to the new job. Also considering the downturn in the sector at the moment, he is lucky to be offered a better paid position.

yes his wife does work. roughly speaking for someone paying tax and prsi at standard rates, what would they be earning gross weekly to give a nett income of €500

It really would depend on what the wife is earning, if she wasn't working, it would be approx 530e a week gross.
