I'm currently paying about €2,200 for myself (52yr old male) and my 8 year old son. I'm on Company Plan Extra Level 2 and he is on EnhancedCare Complete 75 Day-to-Day. I think I'm over insured and I'm thinking of moving both of us to One Plan Family.

The only day to day claims are for dental checkups and cleaning - twice yearly for me and one checkup for my son.

There is a history of cardiac issues and arthritis in my family so I want to be covered for cardiac and orthopaedic.

Is it still the case that where there is 80% cover the Blackrock Clinic don't enforce the 20% shortfall? The HIA website don't allow you to search for 80% cover (only full cover) so it's not easy to find these plans.

Previously in the VHI Swiftcare Clinic the price charged was based on your plan. In the last few years they have standardised the charges so that a patient is charged €75 per visit regardless of their plan. Previously I paid €25 but will now pay €75 per visit.

I would prefer to stay with VHI (better the devil you know) but I do want to save money also.

Total would be €1,405 + €287 = €1,692, a saving of about €600 per year.

HIA Comparison

Anyone any thoughts?

Another option is VHI PMI 53 10 is €1345 + €339 = €1,684

That PMI 5310 does seem good value and it one of the cheaper options on the link for Dermot Goode's site. I have heard him recommend it in the past.

For anyone interested Inspire Plus from Laya seems to be comparable to One Plan Family.

Perhaps I'm missing something as usual but was not impressed with that One Plan Family with VHI as the cover for G.P. appears to be non-existant at 'VHI online doctor - 6 visits' and physio not covered at all. The G.P. is 50% and physio 25 x 12 on the 5310. I know you mention that you have very little requirements at the moment for the day-to-day stuff and sometimes we can all get distracted by that side of the policy but we just never know from one day to the next. I certainly did not intend making a trip to Carrickmines earlier this year but sure isn't that what health insurance is all about :)

With regard to the cardio stuff it would be best to speak to VHI but when I did check with them in the past some of the procedures mentioned on the HIA site are very specialised.

I rang Blackrock and Mater many moons ago and they were both not charging the 20% at that time. I would it would be worth your while to give them a call and sound them out.

snowyb does make reference to this in their post of 2018 and the policy that VHI had with 100% then VHI Health Access was even €1,684 at that stage before the many increases that we have endured since. That policy is probably the equivalent of one of the old Plan B very expensive policies.

I got my VHI renewal yesterday which has increased from €2,187.06 to €2,527.27 - an extra €340.21

I'm seriously looking at VHI 53 10 or Inspire from Laya.

The Laya clinics seem to be open to everyone (not just Laya members). Are they as good as the VHI Swiftcare clinics?

My partner's employer pays for her health insurance and she pays the BIK. They will also pay for partners and dependents.

How do I work out how much it will cost for Laya Inspire for myself and my son if we go through her employer for health insurance?

It would be €1664.16 extra for the two of us. They give a 10% discount on that so it's €1,497.74
So my partner would pay tax, PRSI and USC on that - and this would be the cost to me (to reimburse her)?

And we would probably have to claim back the TRS at the end of the year, if it wasn't already accounted for.

So to calculate how much Laya would cost is as follows.

41% income tax
4% PRSI
8% USC
Total = 53% tax on the BIK of €1,497.74

That is €793.80 for myself and my son.

A saving of €1,733.47 over the year :)
