Hi
I was involved in an accident. He drove through crossroads into the side of me. However it was a compnay vehicle which is insuranced in italy. He has being charged with dangerous driving.
Has any one ever come across anything like this before
any advice would be appreciated

the italian policy MUST give minimium Irish cover whilst the car is being used in Ireland. That means that the italian company will pay you, assuming that the italian driver is in the wrong. from what you say, that should not be a problem. If he pleads guilty to the driving charge or to a lesser charge, then that goes against him in the Civil claim, but if he pleads not guilty yet is found guilty by judge, that does not go against him in the Civil claim.

You should immediately contact the MIBI who will make contact with the italian company and arrange for the italian company to appoint an irish handling agent, that is an irish company, so that you do not have to go to the trouble of phoning/writing to italy, but can contact your local company.

Another option, is for you to claim under your own policy if comprehensive and let your company follow the matter up with the italians.

AFAIA, you will most probably lose you No Claims Discount until the matter is resolved and the claim is paid by the italian company. You will then receive the No Claims discount backdated to the renewal of the policy when your insurance company removed the no claims discount.
You will also have a claim noted against your policy and may find it difficult to move to another insurance company until the matter is resolved.

Correct and right.

Some of the Baltic States levels of 3rd party cover are frighteningly low btw. I had a relative get hit by a Lithuanian car and they claim took 12 months to finalise.

If this was a company car, you may get on better contacting the company directly.

you should let the MIBI handle this, they're responsible for covering all foreign registered vehicles in ireland. you should not deal directly with the insurance company themselves, the MIBI will appoint that insurance company's local claims representative to deal with you, this way everything will be done through english and you should have your claim processed quickly. the MIBI will then seek to recoup costs from the Bureau of the registered vehicle.
