Commute to UK / Europe to work

Hi,
Anyone doing this at present & how does it work out? a bit of background is that I've a family so its not feasible/necessary that I migrate but I'm looking at the possibility of commuting to a new job (UK) however eventually I'd like to reduce the commute to 2 trips a month for 2-3 days at a time, however if this is unworkable & I need to be there more frequently then I'd like any first hand experiences or a more frequent commuter.

I tried commuting over every weekend when my oh moved to london for work I used to fly over on a thursday and back on a monday morning. Booking flights etc was fine and the transport system in the UK is great, it was getting to / from the airport this end that was the hard part, having to battle the M50 in rush hour. It was also quite stressful when a flight was delayed if I was going to be late for work. I'd an understanding employer but even so only managed it for 3 months and then moved over.
 
Have you figured out what exactly are the practicalities of the relevant flights, how to get to the airport for them, does the family have a second car, travel on the other side, accomodation, how to handle bad weather / cancellations, who will be backup while you are away, how much flexibility you can offer or will need from the employer, who will pay flights / expenses, where will you work when at home, how sustainable will your work pattern be for you and the employer, can you handle eating / drinking out all the time, will you get fat / unfit, can you do the job adequately in this semi-remote fashion or will you be in the firing line, also taxation issues if any, also currency issues re sterling? Also Logins, remote access practicalities and indeed legalities, support, also acceptable communication modes (phone, skype, email, instant messenger)?

Not trying to put you off, but these questions are born of experience.

It totally depends on your work situation over there. If its a permanent job and they really expect you to be available fulltime in the UK then that would be very hard and I would be surprised if a UK employer would offer a permanent job if you didn't relocate

If you are contracting and if the nature of the work and the organisation culture is that you can do some work from home then it is very manageable
Even one day a week at home makes a big difference.
Plenty of people have permanent jobs in ireland which require them to be on a flight every week to somewhere
 
I spend 2-3 days a week, 2 weeks a month (on average) out of the country and yes, it can be very tiring.
