Anybody know if you have any comeback on a used car that was bought about 6 weeks ago from a dealer. The thing nearly went on fire this morning. After turning the ignition the electrical box with fuses in it start smoking and some wires under the hood have melted.

Any warranty left?

Was there any warranty offered with the car?

Normally dealers give 3 months warranty on used cars

Re: Any warranty left?

If it were me, I would take it back ... ask to have it fixed or a refund. Contact the SIMI if they are members.

Cars

What Make, Model & Year was the car?

You might have some comeback with the manufacturer if it's a known problem. (Fiat had a big issue in the past with cars going on fire)

Failing that [broken link removed] have a complaints procedure if the dealer is a member?

From the ODCA website

...car was bought from a garage/dealer;

* The consumers' rights may depend on a number of factors, such as, if there was a guarantee/warranty with the car, what was said by the dealer about it and if the consumer had the car checked over by an expert before purchasing.

* However, in general, if there is a fault with the car, the consumer should be entitled to a repair, replacement or refund.

* If the consumer receives no satisfaction directly from the garage, they may wish to contact to the Society of Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), if the garage is a member, to pursue their complaint. under the SIMI's complaints and investigation procedure

* If they are still not happy, they may wish to take legal advice from a solicitor on the best way to proceed.

* If the consumer wishes to claim solely for a repair, they may be able to pursue the matter through the Small Claims Court.

You should definitely purse this issue.

It would depend on whether you bought it 'sold as seen' or with a warranty.

What kind of written receipt did you get?

If you purchased the car using Car-Finance, such as a Hire purchase Agreement, then the finance company can be brought into the arguement. Did the Dealer arrange finance on the car for you?
