Combed/stipled ceilings-can these be painted?

Hi all

A friend has just got the keys to a recent house purchase....now the decorating begins!

The ceilings are combed in some rooms and stipled in others(house is about 20yrs old, was the fashion then!). They are no longer the white colour they should be...

The longterm plan would be to get the ceilings skimmed.

In the shortterm, my question is-can these ceilings be painted with regular white ceiling paint? If so, would using a brush be best as my guess is a roller would only hop over the plaster?

All advice gratefully received!

Absolutely no problem, at all, painting a combed or stipled ceiling. I have a few stipled ones myself. They can be brushed or rolled. I brushed mine. A good masonary brush will do the trick. If you're rolling them, use a thick pile roller sleeve. The store will advise your friend about which one to use.

If they turn out like my ceilings, your friend'll never have to skim them. :)

stiple painting advice

I'd use a roller as recommended by previous poster. But beforehand brush he ceilings with a soft household brush to take off the long pieces of stipe. Otherwise they'll come on the roller and make the painting a slower job.
