Cleaning and painting decking area

Hi all,

I put decking down a year ago and am painting it now for the first time. I probably should have done it before now but the guy that laid it told me to give it 6 or 8 months before painting it, and I've been putting it on the long finger as well. Anyway I got decking cleaner from Aldi and cleaned it today, but there's still some slight green patches left on the wood. Also I'm unsure what to paint it with, I read somewhere that decking oil is best. Any that I've looked at is pretty expensive though. So some questions:

- Is decking oil the way to go as opposed to decking stain?
- If so can anyone recommend a good and preferably cheap brand of decking oil and where to get it?
- Is it any harm to paint decking even if there's still some green residue after cleaning?

Thanks in advance.

Painting or Staining? My deck is painted, I recoated it this year, just pressure washed it after soaking it with a detergent to kill the milldew. I gave it 2 coats of a 100% Acrylic paint. I'm expecting to get 3-5 years between coats.

My Friend has a fantastic deck that is stained, he swears by Sikkens brand stains, very rich deep stain that lasts years.

Not sure about painting or staining, I want whatever will last the longest and be the most durable. I read somewhere that most stains will start to flake after a while so decking oil is the way to go. When you say paint do you mean decking oil type paint or some other type of paint?
