Claiming VAT back on Self Build

I'm sure the answer is 'No' but I'll ask the question anyway

In Northern Ireland, you can claim the VAT back on a self build. Can you do the same in the Republic?

Not unless you are registered for vat here.

Any Joe Soap can do it on a house build in the North..
