Claiming tax relief from both health insurer _and_ Revenue

The company financial advisor mentioned that one can claim tax relief on medical expenses using the "Form MED 1 Health Expenses - Claim for Relief" form.

Now, my health insurance also covers refunds on certain medical expenses such as consultants fees, etc.

Can I claim money back from _both_? If so, how does this work - do I need to get the receipts back from the health insurer, and then send them onto the Revenue? Do I have to mention that I've already claimed part of the money back from my health insurer?

My understanding has always been that if you claim on your Health Insurance that the expense is no longer deducatable for tax purposes. What I'm not sure on is if the Insurer only covers part of the cost, eg, let's say there was an excess of €100 on any claim, is that €100 a potential tax relief?

Hi, I don't know if this helps but here is my eperience in a similar situation. I had laser surgery on my eyes. VHI covered €x of this cost. I then filled out the Med1 form to get tax relief on the balance. Say if the surgery cost €400 and VHI covered €100 I claimed tax relief on the €300 I paid.

correct

Yes- the excess is an actual tax relief.

On the tax form you fill out you will list your expenses, then you have to fill in any payment your Insurer and paid you, and deduct that amount.

Revenue will give you tax relief on that amount. If you print off the tax relief form from their website it should become clear.
