Hi

Currently going through the process of a claim for a home heating oil spill and the costs for the remediation of the oil and then putting the house back in order are getting very high. Actually I think they could go over the sum insured of the buildings cover in the policy.

So will I be liable for costs incurred above this sum or is an oil spill a special case where all the costs are met given how specialised the clean up operation is?

No. Your policy will only cover you up to the prescribed inner limit. After that your costs are your own.

Thanks, not the news I wanted to hear as we could end up out a quite considerable amount of money.

The oil remediation process is probably going to cost about the same amount as the cover of the buildings insurance so the cost to fix the house back up will be borne by ourselves, seems a bit ridiculous especially when you think that if the house was destroyed by a fire, the rebuild cost would be more than covered by the sum insured.

A bloody financial headache we can do without.

That's why it is so important to ensure you are requesting the right cover, and it is your responsibility to ensure you are doing so. If the house was destroyed by fire and you also had oil clean-up costs, you could find yourself in a much worse situation.

That is true by the from my experience insurance companies generally only ask you to insure for the rebuild cost.
