Choosing Irish as part of BA with view to a teaching career

I'm starting a BA next month (mature student) and am looking at my 4 subject choices for year one. My first and second choices are French & Spanish which I would eventually like to teach.
In order to be eligible for teaching jobs in Ireland, not to mention entry to the H.Dip.Ed, I am wondering whether I should take Irish in the first year to resurrect my very rusty knowledge of it.
All opinions/advice welcome.
Thanks

Irish is not a requirement for secondary teaching. Honours Leaving Cert Irish is required for primary teaching. Which do you wish to teach, and if secondary, do you want to teach Irish as a subject?

You obviously have an interest in languages so maybe Irish would be a good choice. Bear in mind if you do take Irish in 1st. year it might be useful later in secondary teaching if school wanted someone to teach Irish to 1st years.
