I stayed in Connaught St in 1978 a lot of the private houses owned by nearby business owners were let out in flats back in 1978 there was lots of footfall, most of these buildings are owned by people under no pressure to sell or do up,in fact most business owners were against any proposed Development taking place back then, they were happy to let it die,

Westmeath Co Council extend out as far as Ganlys roundabout on the Roscommon Road not helping the Connaught side of the town,

on the other side of the border controlled by Roscommon CO Council you have Monksland which is booming,This is where the people who used to support Connaught street now shop and live,

our generous CAT allowances already is inflating the buying power of people who are receiving CAT Type tax breaks pushing more and more people out of been able to buy a home on very good incomes,
In the case of Inheritances, since assets pass on death, beneficiaries are generally unlikely to be young adults competing in the housing market.

If the law is changed they beneficiaries can arrange once the inheritance reaches the parents tax threshold the balance can be passed on to there children tax free , so families will receive even larger tax allowances, putting even more pressure on home ownership for people /families who receive no inheritance resulting in more young Irish people to leave once there education is complete

if the law is changed as suggested expect housing to cost more in a very short time,
I know people who passed on there inheritance to there children to get on the housing ladder ,

What changes are you referring to?

read the heading of this tread,
If it comes to pass it will open up loopholes to benefit family tax planning,
then read the posts from 1 to 164,

The only changes to CAT under discussion by the Government are:
1. Increases in the CAT-free lifetime thresholds for each beneficiary category.
2. Increase in Gift Tax; CAT-free threshold to increase from €3,000 to €5,000
3. A proposal to allow childless couples to select one or two heirs to be treated in the same way as direct descendants (Category A).

It’s clear enough from a combination of Dáil questions, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael manifestos and latest papers from the Tax Strategy Group.

By contrast, I haven’t seen any evidence supporting @bkenn 14’s claim that:

@Sophrosyne respectfully, you clearly haven't read the posts on the thread; the "suggested" changes are hypothetical ones put forward by posters here.

It's great that you're really well read on the topic, but you're not after joining the conversation that was ongoing here.

Thank you for your comment, @torblednam.

Oh I understood that this may have been the primary reason for @bknn 14's concerns.

However, it is also common for people to focus on unlikely scenarios.

Please accept my apologies if bringing balance to the discussion was inappropriate.
