Changing from Gas to Open Fire

I have a gas fire in my sitting room that I want to change to an open fire. I was thinking of removing the gas fire myself as there is a local isolation valve and an accessable joint that I could fit a cap to. Is there any other issues to watch out for e.g. does the chimney or fireplace need any treatment?

Hi redzer check your hearth and insert are suitable should be filled and have expansion lines in them or if cast should have 2 inches of fill/like cement behind and be bonded to the wall. Chimney should be fine if you can see an orange liner/pot or if its square it may be a class two dunbrick type and is suitable for gas only check with a builder if in doubt. On some of the class two chimeys they have a sign on the back when you take out your ceramic fireback stating for gas only but if not there replace with a standard fireback or consider a stove as a more efficient but more expensive from start up option but would pay for itself over time.
