Changing career and losing income protection??

Friend has two children in college - twins - both in 1st year. She wants to change career from health service, but will take a 10k pay drop and lose her income protection insurance. Her income protection is through Cornmarket - it's only related to healthcare. She might not get income protection again - had brush with cancer two years ago, and anyway it would likely be very expensive. My advice was to stay in her healthcare job - though she doesn't like it, and leave changing career until after college, as her two boys won't be dependent on her then, and she would be better able to survive on State illness benefit if she got sick again. However, she will have 3 more years in healthcare and says she doesn't know if she can do this. I am afraid of her giving up her income protection given her health previously. Any comment/advice would be welcome.
