Some advice please...

Can an employer change a job description (with no reduction in hours or volume of work) of an employee & enforce a 12.5% salary decrease?

The employee accepted the job position on a low salary, on the basis that there would be a salary review (upwards) after 3 months. No review took place. A conversation eventually was had after 8 months where the employer advised there were no funds available for a salary increase. The employee agreed to continue working for the original salary.

Two months later, the employer states he wants to change the job title (which actually involves an increase in workload) but lack of 'status' of job title will involve a 12.5% pay cut - which the employee cannot afford to live on.

Has the employee any viable options?

An employer cannot unilaterally change the terms of a contract, it has to be with the approval of the employee. Unfortunately in many cases it's accept the pay cut or loses the job. How much of the original agreement was in writing? Particularly the pay review?

Bear in mind that an employee has few rights in the first 12 months of employment. A call to NERA www.employmentrights.ie might clarify things

Thanks Shesells. There was a contract issued, terms included '3 month probationary period with salary review at that time'.
