Ceasing landline & getting deposit back

We wish to cease our Eircom landline and have a receipt from them showing a deposit of £50 was paid in November 1985.

Are we entitled to receive interest on this deposit?

We phoned Comreg for advice but some guy with an Indian accent wanted to give us the number for the Small Claims Court! We just want to know our rights before contacting Eircom.

When I searched comreg.ie & eircom.ie for "deposit" both returned 0 results.

Comreg are a waste of time in situations like this. And good luck trying to contact eircom customer services!

If the deposit was not subsequently used to offset call/line rental charges then you are probably entitled to it back. But I would doubt that this happened. The only refunds that I've heard of (availed of) in the context of moving away from eircom is any credit that was paid in advance for line rental or service charges. And they used not refund this automatically but only if you asked.

Was it a deposit, or part of the connection fee which was in place at that time? If it was the connection fee (or part thereof), then it's unlikely you'd get it back.

Definitely a deposit. The receipt shows connection £100, deposit £50, total payment recd £150. It has never been used to offset any charges, bills have always been paid by direct debit.
