Currently on CB due to end in July, am thinking about applying for CA. My husband has a second property his mother lives in there is no rent being paid, house may be valued about €200,000 with 120,000 owing we have about €30,0000 in savings. Would it be worth my while applying? Tia

Hi - I wouldn't be optimistic I'm afraid. While your PPR will be ignored for means testing reckoning, the second property will be full assessed as an asset and each €1 thereof will reduced your payment to €0. The €30k savings will also have some impact but the labyrinthine rules on means assessing are note easy to recall. Also, his mother is receiving a benefit in kind, effectively a gift (of market rent). Like CB, CA will be taxed in any case. At least you'll get the carer support grant in June given your timing - should be automatic. Apologies if view is pessimistic in nature but been through this before. Best of luck with the caring work.

The Carers Allowance allows €100,000 per couple before capital is assessed. Based on your figures you have capital of €80,000 from the property after mortgage is allowed and €30,000.00 savings. Thats a total of capital of €10,000 to be assessed which is halved. I think it will be €5.00 means for capital.

Carer's Allowance in Ireland is a means-tested payment where capital (savings, investments, and property excluding your home) up to €50,000 is fully disregarded. Combined capital for couples is halved, and the disregard is applied to this amount. The first home is exempt, though other property is assessed. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Capital Assessment Breakdown (As of 2026):
  • First €50,000: Ignored.
  • €50,001 - €60,000: Assessed at €1 per week per thousand.
  • €60,001 - €70,000: Assessed at €2 per week per thousand.
  • Over €70,000: Assessed at €4 per week per thousand.

Thanks for your replies the Auctioneer called Saturday he said the valuation he'll be putting on it will be 170,000 as it needs work, hoping this might go in our favour.

Just going through payslips also our weekly combined income minus pension, contributions, unions fees is 1500 so come july we will not be over the weekly income threshold.
