Career direction advice

I received a quotation from a career direction coach for a 5 hour assessment which includes pyschometric tests and detailed discussions for E450. I felt that this was a bit excessive for what is involved especially in the current economic climate. Has anyone been to one of these coaches? Is this about the going rate? Can anyone recommend any change of career type websites or coaches?
 
It's the name of a book...not great in my humble opinion...very americanised. Try "Where's my Oasis" by Rowan Manahan instead...it's Irish.
 
I read the 'What colour is my parachute' book a few years ago. I found it helpful but not overly.
My advise is to sit down and think of what you really enjoy doing. What would you really enjoy working at. And then work out your own steps to get you that job.
You dont need a book or other person to tell you what you want.
FÁS have a questionaire which indicates what kind of jobs would suit your personality. Its on their website.
 
I bought a book few years back 'Test Yourself' Jim Barrett, it tests your aptitude, personality and motivation and puts them together and gives you a direction to go in.
There were jobs/careers listed in the book that I never knew existed growing up (crap career guidance at school), one of them is a career I am now getting a qualification in and thoroughly enjoying.
 
If this is what you want to do, it actually sounds reasonable. What company are you using?

Myself and some friends have used them before and would highly rate them compared to other services used. Wasnt that expensive either but that was several years ago...incidentally all who used said service found their direction and all are currently employed and happy out!

There is an organisation in Ireland called the LES - local employment service. Linked to FAS in that funding comes from them but operate in seperate offices through local partnerships very differently. They were set up to work with long term unemployed years ago, however, I believe now in current climate they can see anyone who is 3 months unemployed. You might have to wait 2 weeks, but will see someone and its a free service.

Most staff are trained guidance counsellors and I believe can do all those tests. (ask to meet a guidance counsellor) unlike FAS, its a one to one session for as long as required.

One of the difficulties of many career guidance providers (both personal and written) is that while they can offer you some guidance of the type of work to which you might be best suited, they don't balance this with any consideration of the related labour market conditions and the capacity of any chosen route to provide a sustainable lifestyle.

You might "find" that your "real calling" is creative writing but this won't necessarily hack it when you have to pay bills. A reputable career advisor with a strong knowledge of labour market conditions would be the way to go but they seem to be thin on the ground.
