Career change: Manufacturing/Quality to the Gardai. Your thoughts?

I’m 28 years of age. After a Degree in manufacturing, a post grad in quality and 4 years experience in the manufacturing industry, I now find myself seriously considering applying for the Gardai?

Gardai.
Pros: Possibly more exciting job
Paid over-time
Job security

Cons: Pay cut (Currently at 35k)
5 years of college for what???


Engineering.
Pros: I have training / experience & I think I’m good at it!!!

Cons: Not paid for overtime
Need to move employer for significant salary increase
No prospect of promotion with current employer
Next carrier step is management (More study and change of employer!)

Do you think this is a move worth considering or is it a simple case of “the grass is always greener”!

Any comments are greatly appreciated.
 
Guards cons/facts: shift-work, very stressful, not being paid half enough for the crap you put up with, guards in limelight,ie cant afford to make one mistake in life. you will make the papers/news cause your a guard..,payscale...will take a few years before you earn a good crust and finally you will have McDowell telling you what to do,not your immediate superior
If I had to choose,Id stick with manufacturing.
 
What area of manufacturing are you in and where are you based as your salary seems low.

What sort of manufacturing are you in; engineering, pharma, medical device, construction?
 
Hi Craic,
You are correct in saying "grass is always greener" - my advice (I have changed from Nursing to Computer Programmer) is to make the most of the skills you have.
If you need to study try and do it part time - to join the guards you are looking at starting alll over again!!
 
My brother changed from Qunatity Surveying to Garda. Doesn't regret it for a minute. Sometimes joining an organisation like the Guards is a lifetime ambition. If you don't like the field you are in why not change.

How about joining the volunteers in the Gardai first and seeing how you like it before such a big committment?
