Career break versus leave of absence

Am thinking of taking some time out...
Before I start the ball rolling, anyone know if "career break" and "leave of absence" mean the same thing, or are they different?
Thanks

In my company they are the exact same thing. However other employments may have differing definitions of the terms.

Does your contract of employment clarify what these terms mean in your specific situation? They are not statutory entitments so presumably are goverened by the emloyee's contract of employment.

Post crossed with previous one.

Will check my contract, but I dont remember when signing it, that it contained anything about these matters.
Thanks

If it doesn't state anything explicit about these issues then I reckon you'd need to clarify them with your employer separately. There are no statutory entitlements to career breaks or general leaves of absence (as opposed to compassionate leave, parental leave etc.).

Public sector bodies generally have very specific entitlements around career breaks - how long you can go for, how many seperate breaks you can have, no work for your employer during your break, etc. I'm not aware of any employer (public or private) that has a general 'leave of absence' policy.

Checked my contract and as I expected there is nothing about my query. Will have to ask HR about it.
Unfortunately its down, I think, to my boss, who has given leave to one person in the last six months and refused someone else, who then quit. So we are left with a post we have difficulty filling and the prospect of retraining someone else when we do fill it. Where I work has a history of giving leave, then advertising and filling the job, and when the person comes back to work they are given the next available job. In my field this doesnt happen everywhere, have worked in places where the job is filled by a locum.
I am in a slightly specialised position and there is only me doing the job, so if they do that to me, I am never going to get the job I do now back, because someone else will have been given the post permanently while I am away. I would then be eventually given a job in the general area that I originally trained for, and I am not happy with that and would stick it for a while and then look elsewhere.
Have I any chance of persuading them to hold my job for me and only filling it on a temporary basis while I am away?? I just dont know, and I will only find out by asking. Thanks for listening to/reading my rant!!

I know of some larger IT companies that have policies allowing employees with a certain number of years service (often 3-5) to take a sabbatical (possibly unpaid - not sure) of a few 3 months+. My own employer has such a policy but I'm not sure if it applies to non US employees. There are some companies that operate that scheme in Ireland though.
