I had a problem recently with my diesel escort, where it wouldn't start, eventually got it started and it's been running fine ever since.Mechanic gave it the once over and couldn't find anything wrong...he had thought maybe air was getting into the fule pipe.Anyway tried to start it again the other night and the same thing happened kept turning over but wouldn't start...pushed the acclerator to the floor and it started first time...why does the acclerator on the floor help...does it give it more diesel

Re: Car Sarts when Acclerator pushed to Floor

you may well need heater plugs

If the car hasnt had a service recently then I advise you to have one done soon. Make sure you have a new fuel filter fitted. Have the heater plugs tested before splashing out on new ones.

Yeah I thought the heater plugs as well but the mechanic said they were fine.Fuel filter might be an option as I tended to only fill it when near empty...

It can be many things.....

On a cold night battery performance can be at fault , the starter voltage too low when you turn the car over and nothing else works ie control units or other electrical items ...suggest switch the lights on then turn the car over. if the lights dim considerably when you do this it may well be a battery/alternator/starter motor.
Heater plugs ...only one way to test em...take em out hook them up directly to the battery.your mechanic probably already did this.
air in the fuel system/back feeding by way of fuel travelling back to the tank.

must say a bitch of a fault to diagnose if its so intermittent.

Yo

check the solenoid attached to the front of the fuel injection pump!
does your car puff out grey white smoke occasionally?
I had 98 escort which had similar symptom as yours and this was found to be the problem
(£100stg from a diesel fitter £26 from Ebay :))

Get the primer pump checked. Its contained in the housing that the fuel filter screws on to.Inside this pump is a diaphragm which splits especially when it gets used to pump diesel into a new filter. When the car is stopped for a while the fuel drains back to the tank and the starter has to pump up the fuel before the engine starts. Not good for temper/battery/starter.Did the trouble start after a service by any chance? Have a sniff around the engine bay for leaking diesel, not very scientific but sometimes old ways are best!!
