Car Service in Dublin, how honest are mechanics and dealers?

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting in the forum.

Today I collected my car from one of Toyota's dealer in Dublin after a full service and noticed what I believe to be an honest mistake in my invoice. Prior to that the sales rep recommended me to change three tires. I asked how low they were and he said that two of them had their tread depth lower than 2mm, so I authorized the change of these two only. With my invoice in hand, I noticed that I have being charged for the three tyres. I going back to the dealer to get a correct invoice and my money back, but that mistake made me wonder about all the other things in the invoice that I am unable to understand. How often are they legit? I couldn't find online much details of what is included in a toyota full service to double check with my invoice. Thanks in advance!

PS: I come from a country where unfortunately it is not uncommon for mechanics and dealers to add random things to the invoice in order to bump up their revenue.

Service items and frequency (mileage and/or time) are all detailed in the Service & Warranty booklet supplied with your car. It won't detail charges and costs as it's international in nature but should give you an indication of the service parts and frequencies for replacement.

Tyres are the service items that defy standardisation. So much depends on how and where they are used. Taxi, family car, motorway use or country roads, over or under-inflated, towing heavy loads or lightly loaded, huge variety.

Why were you dealing with sales for a service? The service manager would be more appropriate to your situation. I would never buy tyres from a main dealer; better deals to be had from specialist tyre shops.

Toyota main dealers reputation speaks volumes for them.however expect too pay top money for service and for consumables fitted too your car.
I think they would be fairly honest in there dealings.

That's coming from a customer who has drove Toyota s the last 15 years but wouldn't get my car serviced from them.

No more or less honest than anyone else. Integrity is not a selecting characteristic for any job. That's why there are (or should be) rules and laws in place which dictate how people should act.

You might get people telling you things need replacing when they're still serviceable but I would think it would be very rare to only replace two tyres and charge you for three, that's surely a genuine mistake.

I had my car in a toyota dealer for a service and was told that I required rear brake pads, I said to leave them and when I got home I checked them and they were only a 1/3 worn, they also suggested I needed new ECU because it ticked over fast when cold. when I researched it I found this was a normal Toyota function

i use an independent mechanic ,id choose him every time over a main dealer , not because of price but because its often an intern - young guy on an apprenticeship who,s doing the servicing in a main dealers

I'd be the same. I've almost always had problems with Dealers. Less so with independents I've built up a history with.

Thank you all for your valuable opinions and insights. I really appreciate it. It put my mind to rest.

The extra tyre they had charged was a mistake and I got my money back.

As many of you suggested, I will bring my car to a mechanic next time I have to service it.

Wish you all a happy Halloween.
