Can car insurance be taken out on a "joint" basis?

Myself and the wife are insured on 1 car, I'm the main driver, and she's the named driver. Cover is fully comp, so I can drive other cars, but she cannot as she's the named driver. She is also not getting the benefit of building up a no claims bonus.

Is there a way to set up insurance so that we both can drive other cars, and she gets a no claims bonus if she gets a car of her own in the future?

Most companies will give her an introductory NCB when she buys her own car and it is normally based on how many years accident free driving that she has.

My boyfriend was insureed on his father's policy for 8 years before taking out his own, he was allowed the max no claims bonus on this after producing a letter from his father's insurance company. Maybe you can check if your insurance company does the same?

Thanks for the replies, it appears that if she buys her own car, they will extend an introductory NCB to her on the basis of named driving experience.

There doesn't seem to be a way of getting cover to drive other cars though ...
