Hi,
when taking out car insurance is it essential to be 'the owner on the log book' if it is within the family, even though you will be the main driver? Wondering if car ownship should be transferred?

You will probably find most insurers standard quotes assume the car is owned by you or your spouse.
It might not be problem if the car belongs to another, but it will probably cost more.

I've been shopping for motor insurance lately and few if any of the online quote forms explicitly ask if the vehicle is owned by the person applying. And my current AIG policy says nothing about vehicle ownership other than this:
Section 1 - Loss Or Damage To Your Car
...
If, to our knowledge, your car belongs to somebody else or is the subject of a hire purchase or leasing agreement we will make any payment to the legal owner.
But maybe this is implicit?
Regardless of the insurer one of the the basic legal principles of insurance states you must have an 'insurable interest' in the risk i.e. you must own the car. Exception being your spouse.

It is often in the insurers assumptions.
Aviva assume when offering an online quote that the car is owned and registered in either your name or your wife / husband / partner.

Allianz assume the same.

AIG's FAQ's say the same.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that.

Can I insure a car I don't own?

To insure a car, AIG requires that you or your spouse/partner are the registered owner of that car. However, if you wish to temporarily drive a garage car while your own car is in for a service, please speak with out team to discuss temporary cover options.

Thanks all. I don't like to mess around with insurance companies, for obvious reasons. I'll tell them it is owned by another family member to be certain.

Sorry I can't link to this but it appears as a pop-up window from a link on the main AXA quotation site: https://www.axa.ie/car-insurance/quote/your-details?promoCode=AXP020001

"Car insurance assumptions

We make certain assumptions about you and your car in order to provide you with a quote. If you decide to take a policy with us, you will be required to explicitly confirm these assumptions are true.

Your car must:
  • be owned by and registered to you and/or your spouse/civil partner
  • be right hand drive
  • have never been modified beyond the manufacturer's specification. Modifications may be performance enhancing, cosmetic and/or affect the safety of the vehicle
  • be purchased within the last 30 days, where you have no previous insurance in your own name
You and any person(s) driving the car:
  • You or any person(s) driving the car do not have any health or fitness condition or use any medication or drugs that must be notified to the Driving Licence Authorities as part of a driving licence application.
  • You or any person(s) driving the car have not previously been refused or declined motor insurance
  • You or any person(s) driving the car have not previously had a motor policy cancelled by an Insurer (including cancellation due to non-payment of an insurance premium)
In the last 7 years you, or any person(s) driving the vehicle, have not:
  • Been convicted of a motoring offence or received any criminal conviction relating to motor vehicles
  • Had any prosecution pending relating to motor vehicles other than penalty points

About You:

Double Insurance Warning
  • Please ensure you are not insuring the same car twice.
Accuracy and Honesty Warning
  • The information you have given us in answer to the questions which we have asked you has legal effect as a representation made by you to AXA prior to entering into the contract of insurance. Please read this information carefully and make sure it is correct. If you have made any misrepresentation AXA may have the right to repudiate liability, or limit the amount payable under any claim, or terminate the contract of insurance on giving you reasonable notice. As a result, you may also find it difficult to arrange this type of insurance in the future."

I lived abroad in EU countries where it was standard that as the owner of a car you could declare someone else, eg a son, or anyone, as the operator of the car (with their permission obviously). This meant they could insure it, they would get traffic penalties, etc. Is there no such concept in Ireland?

You can't insure something unless you have an interest or own it I believe. You can't take out insurance on a house you don't own etc...

I don't see how that would prevent you from taking out the legal minimum 3rd party only insurance (if such a product exists, most insurers throw in fire and theft).

Most if not all will only provide a quote if you confirm you are the registered owner. It may be possible to arrange cover by calling them however.

Only if you own it. While they might allow you to pay for such cover, you can't claim on it as you don't have an insurable interest.
