Car hire insurance

Am heading to australia for a few weeks later in the year am looking at hiring a car the excess insurance is nearly more than the car hire....is it possible to just get the excess insurance here in ireland and use it over ther( one of the few things ireland is actually cheap in)

Yes, but.

If there is damage you will have to pay first in Australia, then claim later from your Irish insurnce company. Whereas if you buy the hire company's insurance they make the claim. At least that is how it works in Europe.

How much is the excess.

70 Eur for a year and it covers almost everywhere in the world.
I never had to make a claim, but the process is indeed as @cremeegg describes.

Thanks for the reply to get the best insurance in australia which brings the excess from 4000 dollars to 0 dollars is 400 euro got a quote in ireland for 80 euro for the year

I when with them a few times and had no issues with claims . All not my fault . Once i had report from hire car company, copy of my liceese and a copy of credit bill showing the excess been charged to me . Was payed out a week later. Logest time was getting the paperwork required. Used to year policy 70 to 85 euro year. They did cover extra that car hire insuranve did not cover like all glass inculing mirrors, lights. Miss fueling , loss key and personal injury etc .

My damges was 3rd party while the was parked. Shopping trolley marks in the back bumper . Another was in car park again car next door car banged our door. And last one parked on street in france somebody scrapped the side of the car.
