I had an Ulster Bank visa card for the last 3 years-the first 6 months were interest free. Recently I have been unable to clear the balance each month, and it stands at around €2600. I called Ulster Bank several times asking if there were any offers available to me with lower interest (I was paying 16.9%) or if I would be eligible for any other cards. They refused to offer me anything else so I decided to apply for a Halifax card and do a balance transfer. The balance transfer happened fairly painlessly, so I called Ulster Bank today to cancel the card. They immediately offered to reduce my interest rate to 9.9%!!!
Just said I would let everyone know in case it inspired anyone else to ring up their credit card company and renegotiate! I cancelled the card anyway as Halifax deal is better, but for anyone who can't/won't do a balance transfer it might be worth a try.
