This is probably a really stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway.
Because Social Welfare work on a 6 day week is it possible to work a few hours on a Sunday and claim illness benefit? I'm guessing the answer is no.

It's a pity they don't have a way for people on illness benefit to work a few hours, with benefit docked accordingly. If someone can work 6 hours a week but not 36 they should be encouraged to do so - ultimately it would help people rehabilitate quicker and get back to work.

No, you can't work on a Sunday and claim Illness Benefit for the rest of the week.... but see Clubman's link for the options.

As Clubman states may be allowed to work and get full Illness Benefit subject to certain conditions
  • Get the Departments permission before you start. (Write to them stating the work would be beneficial to your recovery)
  • Request an Exemption from Rule 5 of the Rules of Behavour
  • You can work up to 20 hours per week

Thanks for the replies. I had read info from that link before but didn't pay enough attention to the exemption. I'll look into it.
