Can you claim relief for a dental consultation for non routine treatment?

I would have thought not, since the course of action/treatment couldn't be predetermined before the consultation?

Did they bill you sepeartely for both ? I would have ytjought the initial consultation would be deducted from the final bill but lat time I had root canal they started at the first consultation anyway.

This was for an implant. I had the consultation in late 2016 but haven't had the treatment yet. It's elective and I'm in no rush to put myself through it. I have paid for the consultation but not the treatment as I haven't had it yet. I was referred by my own dentist to a specialist clinic who did the consultation.

I'm pretty sure that relief for the treatment itself is allowed but not the consultation.

I typically follow a simple rule with claiming dental expenses - if the dentist gives you a Med 2 then you can claim but you may have to ask for the form (from the dentist). A Med 2 is the form provided by the dentist which indicates the treatment is eligible for tax relief. I've never known the Revenue to challenge a Med 2 but that does not, of course, mean that they won't.
