My mother in law reached retirement age last year. It was in her contract that she must retire at 65.

She asked if she could work for another year. Her employer agreed. That year is up and she asked for another year. Her employer has refused.

She has worked here (private sector) for 13 years and would like to continue. Where does she stand. Has the company set a precedent with allowing her to continue for an extra year after the contract.

She is not in a union so doesn't know where to go for advice. Any advice is welcome.

If her employment contract states retirement age is 65 then she is bound by that contract.
Obviously her employer either allowed her a concession to continue or re-employed her on contract for 1 year

It would be worth making a phone call to the Equality Authority to see if they have come across these situations before (though I'm not sure if they still have telephones after their 43% budget cut).
