Can standalone DVD recorder be used as computer DVD writer?

Possibly dumb question but can some regular standalone DVD recorders (for use with the telly) also be hooked up to a laptop and used as a DVD writer? I suspect not but...

Thanks - as I suspected. Wonder if such recorders contain a standard IDE drive inside that could be taken out and used if necessary?
