Can my employer cancel my PMI without informing me first?

Quick question for you all:

My employer has just cancelled the private medical insurance provided under contract to its employees, without telling anyone in advance.

Contracts state that employees must be given one month's notice in advance of any material changes to contracts - surely this would qualify?

Thanks in advance.

I agree. It looks like they are in breach of contract. They are also very bad at relating to their employees.

Tangential issue but (a) they were presumably deducting via payroll BIK tax/PRSI in respect of this benefit up to now but (b) you are also entitled to claim a tax credit yourself on these payments. Just mentioning this in case (a) your BIK tax is in arrears and/or (b) you were not claiming the tax credit which you could backdate by up to 4 years.

your employer may may switching between providers-its been known to happen that there is a week or two lapse between your old policy being cancelled and your new provider setting the scheme up.

hr should tell you straight away-if they wont you can always say that you/your partner will need your cover shortly
