Can I set the Capital loss on a UK gilt against capital gains elsewhere?

The annual CGT exemption is €1,270. I’m wondering as an Irish Resident if I buy a UK Gilt e.g. Treasury Dec 28, 6% currently priced at 103.9 – then hold to maturity could I use the Capital loss to offset against other Capital gains?

I believe so but unless your income is quite low you will end up paying a greater amount in income tax on the 6% coupon. If you were paying no income tax, PRSI or USC but had capital gains to shelter it might make sense. Other on here will have a better sense of Revenue's attitude to this but seems to be OK on the face of it.
