Can I sell machinery I have stored for someone?

If you store plant machinery for over a year without being paid storage for it
what are the legalities if you sell it to take your fee and then pay the owner of the machinery the balance. Someone somewhere along the line mentioned something about a year and a day.

Much appreciated if anyone can help.

Looking for info in relation to this also. A normal rental or storage agreement states that you can sell it to cover your costs but what are your rights without a proper rental or storage agreement in place.

They say possession is 9/10th's of the law

In our case there would have been a verbal agrement on rental and storage rates agreed.
