Looking at changing my mobile phone. Can anybody tell me if I can just go in an buy a mobile phone itself off the shelf. In my opinion "free" phone credit seems to be a bit of a lark these days given that you have to top-up by 20e to get 10e credit per month. I certainly would not use that amount per month. Basically I just want to change my phone. Can I just do that and put my old sim card into it? Don't want to make a muppet of myself in Vodafone shop if this is a completely stupid question.

Yes. Look for 'unlocked' or 'sim-free' phones. Will work with any network aprt from '3' who make you buy one of their phones. For example sell sim-free phones.

Yes, you can even buy on ebay which I did recently as I had an old model phone, a Nokia 6310, and I bought a reconditioned one as new for 67 Euros incl. postage from the UK.

I've put off getting a new phone now for months because of this top up by 20 euro a month lark etc I have since lost my phone and I am now back using my ancient Nokia phone from years ago - anybody fancy a game of snake (somebody will get this joke-trust me)?

Happy Girl, there is a shop on Georges Street, Dublin opposite Dunnes Home, if you live anywhere in that direction, very good. Also, the smaller shops around Leonard's Corner etc are good places to get a phone without going with a particular network. You don't necessarily have to buy in the big chain stores, you'll be surprised at how good some of those small shops are.

you can still buy a vodafone prepay phone and not use the call credit deal it would still be cheaper than buying a sim free phone
