Probably a silly question, and I suspect that the answer is something like 'you can only claim one benefit so claim whichever is higher', but can someone in receipt of the Transitional or Contributory Pension also claim Carers Allowance?
You may be entitled to half-rate carers allowance as well as your pension provided you pass the means test and the other conditions re the need for care etc are complied with
