Can’t open Revolut Basic Account if you have another account elsewhere?!

A family member signed up for a Revolut basic account but is being asked in the process to declare he hasn’t already got an account with another credit institution! Revolut customer support person says this is nothing new, yet all of my friends who have a basic account opened it while already holding a bank account elsewhere.
Very frustrating. Any advice appreciated.

According to Citizens Information:

To get a basic bank account, you must:

• Be at least 18 years of age (or at least 16 for AIB)
• Be legally resident in the EU
• Not have another current account with a bank in Ireland

Perhaps you wanted a Standard account rather than a Basic account?
