Buying some garden from neighbours

In order to build a good size extension and keep a 3ft side passage I need to approach my neighbours from an adjoining estate about purchasing the bottom 5ft (so about 5ft deep by 30ft long) of their circa 100ft back garden. Does anybody have any advice on how to approach this.

Tks

I did this. Just approach them and tell them the truth. Be completely honest. Let them know what you are going to use the space for and how you are going to maintain the border. Perhaps you can improve the border and they will benefit from it.

30ft x5ft... I bought a 120ft x 30ft plot and paid €14,000.

So yours is small in comparison but I wouldn't try to go in with too low an offer. It won't be worth their while and you might just annoy them.

You might want to consider what kind of impact will the extension have on them, will it be unobtrusive? If you can show them rough plans or sketches it might help allay and concerns they have in this regard and make them more amenable to selling the piece of land.
