Buying off plans-no details on garden

Hi,
I am buying a house off the plans, with staged payments. On signing contracts we will probably be handing over 1/3 of the total sum (including site cost). However we are not being told any details of the size of the garden we will get. We have the site plan but we dont really want to be guessing off a drawing which has "Do Not Scale" written on it! Is it normal practice not to be given somewhat exact detail of gardens (wouldnt mind if they said it could be plus/minus three feet difference in reality). Would an engineer be able to survey the site?

We are also buying from the plans, and asked our solicitor to request measurements for the garden as we were thinking of getting a conservatory (as it's a very small house) and it would help to know exactly the size of the garden. Our solicitor said he would ask but they wouldn't usually furnish them and they didn't - so we just had to go up there and visualise. So in answer to your question I don't think they usually furnish the measurements (You can't even get the exact measurements for the rooms at the best of times).
