Hi guys,

I've a limited company here in Ireland with a registered VAT number. I just set up an account with Amazon.co.uk and if you input your VAT number then they allow you to buy items for the cost price less VAT. I have two questions about this.

(1) If I'm purchasing something directly related to my business (eg computer screen) from amazon then is it OK that I'm not paying VAT on it?

(2) Is there somewhere I need to account for this VAT-exempt purchase? It can't appear in my bi-monthly VAT3 return as it would just add zero to the purchasees section right?? I just thought, maybe my end of year VAT RCD is sufficient to account for it?

Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Stephen

(1) Yes

(2) Intra EU acquisitions are zero rated.
So you self account under the reverse charge basis, so effectively you account for sales VAT at 23% and then take a credit for the same amount in purchase VAT on your VAT3.
