Buy & Sell Reporting for Share Dealing

Can anyone explain the specifics of how a buy or sell trade is reported to the stock exchange. For example: Buy volume is 30,000 and Sell volume is 50,000. What determines the buy trade volume of 30,000?

I'm guessing that it's where one investor place a buy order for x amount of shares and then another investor just sells at market price, that this would be reported as a buy trade. Is this correct?
