Power city, Currys and others have the SIM free phone I am interested in for €180, Amazon.ie have it for €140. If the operating system, memory, camera guarantee etc are identical is there any reason not to buy from Amazon.ie ?

Second question, am I right in thinking there is no point in paying an extra €40 for a 5G phone, I'm with An Post who are 4G, it does what I need and I have never had any problems.

Tks.

Not any point if your service operator doesn't have it - and if it is unlikely to have it in the medium term (?).
I have 5G with Sky - who also operate over the Vodafone network. As we have a much better 5G signal around where we live I would stick to a 5G phone if updating. Maybe check the signal strength in your locality: https://coveragemap.comreg.ie/map.

Bought mine from Italy, delivered in a few days, saved c.€300.

Chose to do so after local store told me that they "hadn't had that model in months" despite it being on display & were unable (or unwilling) to order it in.

Yes would agree, no point in buying a 5G phone if not on a 5G plan
I think my phone is a 5G model but I'm on a 4G plan form GoMo and I've no intention of moving to their 5G plan as the plan I'm on is perfect for me and only costs a tenner a month

If the phones are the same then yes but from Amazon and save yourself €40, why give a retailer more when you don't have to??
