Building a PC from scratch

I was looking into building a new pc from the start and buying all the parts seperate.

I would be looking for a barebones case with fans, wires etc inside it already so I can just plug the part in withouth needing to put wiring in myself.

Do you know where I can get these barebones cases from?

Everything else I need seems to be on sites I've found and www.newegg.com seems a good deal. However I'm thinking about any charges (eg. customs) to buy over $1000 USD from the states and import to Ireland. How do I find out about these charges?

Would it be very expensive to do this? - Would it be better to find a website based in the EU and buy my parts there?

If so, do you know any sites like this? - I've found:
http://www.yoyotech.co.uk
http://www.cougar-systems.co.uk
http://www.overclockers.co.uk

I think they're all in the EU.

Thanks for any help.

You could always try Maplin who have 2 stores in Dublin at Jervis Street and Blanchardstown. They definitely have the cases and everything else you would need.

I've found this msn group to be helpful. Its been around for about 10 years.

Or if you find a good one which supports the motherboard you wish to have, you could gut an old pc and use its case to save money for other parts.

A really good US site for all kinds of parts is

Hi Sn@kbite,

I used to do this a few years ago, but have long given it up, as it is way way cheaper now to buy ready built PC's. esp. high spec ones.

Have a look at the building & upgrading forum on boards.ie also.
I built a PC no. of years back, don't think I saved a whole lot. Building the HW is relatively straightforward, though it is a noisy machine. Installing the OS & configuring the drivers was a pain.

How much customs would be charged on a $209 USD PC processor?

revenue.ie doesn't seem to give charges for anything. I can only find the documents needed for larger items.

Have a look at komplett.ie

They do pre bundled packs, everything ready to go, you just assemble. Or do what I used to do, use them as a template, then add/remove or changed what you like.

I used to build PCs a few years back, built them to spec for whoever wanted them.. but as someone already said here, building your own one really doesnt save you time and then with most high end PCs or workstations you get additional warranty as standard.. let someone else take the hassle and headaches..

I've stopped building my own. I spend more time building and fiddling with than I did using it. It was cheaper if you shop around to get a pre build.
